It's no secret that we at DAME love Esquire magazine. Like a lot of its female readers, we love its humor, great feature writing and that fly-on-the-wall peek into the thinking man's mind. We love that you've got us telling jokes and that you want our insight into the ten things you guys should know about us. And thanks for helping our men consistently look better. In fact, we often joke that if DAME had a boyfriend in media virtual land, his name would be Esquire.
But Esquire, baby, we've got a couple questions for you. We've read your anniversary issue cover to cover - and now we see you've released your 75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century list. We agree with their entries – lots of new faces in business, academia, arts and politics, and some familiar but worthwhile in entertainment. But where are the women, Esquire?
Out of 75 people, only 8.5 entries were women – the .5 is the Melinda half and of the Bill and Melinda Gates entry. The 8 are Hillary Clinton for obvious reasons; world musician M.I.A; journalist Samantha Power; Judge Sonia Sotomayor who would be Obama’s first appointment to the Supreme Court; Meghan O’Sullivan, slated to rebuild Republican foreign policy; Lisa Randall, wunderkind professor of physics at Harvard; Scarlett Johansson for “bombshell†reasons; and Oprah for “she owns the world†reasons.
We don’t think anyone on the list should be replaced, but would it have killed you guys to do the “100 Most Influential…†and thrown in a few more chicks – it’s not like you’d have to look that hard….
Michelle Obama for one – easy.
Or Arianna Huffington - love or hate her politics, she continues to bring together liberal thinkers from all over the world and gives them a huge platform for discussion.
How about Sonia Gandhi - the leader of India’s National Congress Party who may change the dynamics of the U.S./India relationship.
And Chelsea Handler - comedian, talk show host, author - she pushes the envelope so far it's not even an envelope anymore.
Or Sheila Bair - she's in charge of this little thing called the FDIC - the whole face of U.S. Finance is changing, she's at the helm.
And Dr. Julie Gerberding who runs the CDC – let’s face it, we’re only going to have more disease outbreaks and scares.
Or Neelie Kroes - the Competition Commissoner for the EU, a staunch supporter of women in business and not afraid to levy huge fines for unfair business practices against the world’s heavyweight corporations.
And Green Party Presidential Candidate Cynthia McKinney - she doesn't have a chance in hell, but with her beat poetry-style stumping, she's raising consciousness on progressive issues.
Don't forget Marian Wright Edelman - the founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund, an organization that will only be called upon more with families in increasing financial woe.
And what about Tina Fey - actor, writer, producer - puts out the only watchable anything on TV and she's just getting started.
You get the picture, Esquire? Hope this helps with the next list. Oh, and don't worry, we're not breaking up.
