Will God Give You Gas?

The unanswered prayers of the Pray at the Pump Movement

As anyone who has ever seen an Oscar/Emmy/Grammy acceptance speech knows, God hears prayers and answers them. Some of them, anyway; our Lord is notoriously picky about who He rewards (though He loves us all, right? Go figure). Now Rocky Twyman, a Seventh-day Adventist Church member, hopes his prayers will finally be among those answered by the fickle Bearded One.

In response to skyrocketing fuel prices, Twyman founded the Pray at the Pump Movement last April, which is pretty self-explanatory. And talk about effective—since the first day Tywman and his hand holders bowed their righteous heads at a gas station in Washington D.C. (back when the national average per gallon was a mere $3.53), prices have done nothing but rise.

Though he’s not bailing on God power, Twyman is on to plan B: “I think we have just entered a new phase,” he stated. “We were in the prayerful phase, but now we're going into a more activist phase, because we feel that whole faith without works is dead.”

The “works” part consists of moving the prayer fest from gas stations to the steps of the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in D.C., where Twyman hopes to get the Saudis to release 1.2 million barrels of oil per day instead of the current 200,000. He’s now armed with a petition, but the Seventh-day Adventist is still focusing on prayer, waiting for God to listen. Who then hopefully, will be able to get Muhammad to listen.
